The custom of the offering of candles in our tradition represents openness of our hearts to the Lord. If this is followed, the brethren and faithful hold the lighted candles in their hands until the rite of offering, which occurs while the Offertory chant is sung. At Evening Prayer, the prose Inviolata may be sung after the short reading, after or in place of the responsory.

SEASON OF LENT

Lent is a penitential season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving in preparation for Easter.
Catholics over the age of reason are required to receive Holy Communion at least once a year. (CIC 920 #1); in Australia and New Zealand, between Ash Wednesday and Trinity Sunday.
On the Sundays of Lent, all other celebrations are prohibited, and even solemnities are transferred. Feasts and memorials are omitted. On the other days of Lent, only solemnities and feasts are permitted. Memorials, however, may be celebrated as commemorations, as follows:
a) At the office of Readings, the proper hagiographic reading may be added as a third reading, after the patristic reading and its responsory;
b) At Lauds and Vespers, after the Collect of the day, omitting the conclusion, the antiphon and Collect of the saint may be added;
c) At Mass, the Collect of the saint may be used.

Masses for various necessities and votive Masses are prohibited, except with permission of the local Ordinary. The “daily” Mass for the dead is prohibited.
Alleluia is omitted in all texts wherever it occurs. The Prayer over the People at the end of Mass is recommended on weekdays.

In the celebration of Matrimony, the Nuptial Blessing is given, but the spouses are to be advised to have regard to the nature of the Lenten season.
OPPenitential practices during Lent:
According to Church Law, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are observed as days of fast and abstinence. According to the Statue of the Province (n. 10), all the Fridays in Lent are days of fast and abstinence for the brethren. The House Chapter is to decide other forms of community penance for Lent. (LCO 49 III)
If it seems appropriate, on Ash Wednesday or on other days during Lent, in place of the former rite of the penitential psalms, some communal penitential celebration or "rite of reconciliation" may be held, whether sacramental or non-sacramental (according to the spirit of the Rite of Penance, nn.36 - 37). This celebration may not immediately precede Mass.
OPNight Prayer in Lent:
If Night Prayer is sung, the In pace response may be used in place of "Into your hands." The antiphons Evigila or O Rex may be used in place of the gospel canticle antiphon "Save us."
If Night Prayer is not sung, the antiphons Evigila and O Rex may be used for the gospel canticle at Evening Prayer in place of the regular antiphon at Evening Prayer I and II of Sundays of Lent.
The chant Media vita may be used in place of the short response at Night Prayer or at Evening Prayer, or even at other celebrations, such as a penitential liturgy on Ash Wednesday or on Thursday of Holy Week (before the beginning of the Easter Triduum).

Special ministers of communion and deacons may bring blessed ashes to the sick and those confined to their homes. If a minister is not available, a member of the family or another person may bring the blessed ashes to a shut-in, using one of the formulas in the Sacramentary to impose ashes.
OPFor pastoral reasons the blessing and distribution of ashes may take place outside Mass. In this case it may be appropriately joined to some hour of the Office, especially Midday Prayer or the Office of Readings.
NB:        When the blessing and distribution of ashes takes place outside Mass and apart from an hour of the Office, the entire liturgy of the word should be celebrated: entrance song, opening prayer, readings and chants, homily, blessing and distribution of ashes, and general intercessions.

OPThe Commemoration of the Lord's Entrance may take one of three forms, as described in the Missal: Blessing and Procession, Solemn Entrance, or Simple Entrance. The processional cross should be suitably decorated. The blessing of palms may not be celebrated without the following procession and Mass. The blessing and solemn entrance, but not the procession, may be celebrated at a second Mass if many of the faithful are present.
OPThe rite in the Dominican Proper may be used, including our proper chants, texts for the blessing of palms and the station at the entrance to the church or the choir, with the antiphon Ave Rex noster.
The Passion may be read by three deacons, or lay readers with the priest taking the part of Christ, without candles, incense, greeting, sign of the cross or acclamation. At the mention of the Lord's death, all pause and kneel. Where pastoral reasons require it, one or both of the readings before the Passion may be omitted.
At the end of the Passion, The Gospel of the Lord, is said, but the book is not kissed.

The Chrism Mass may be celebrated in the morning, or on another day earlier this week. White vestments are worn. It is especially fitting that priests concelebrate with the bishop. Priests may communicate under both species, even if not concelebrating.
Apart from the Chrism Mass and the Mass of the Last Supper, all Masses are prohibited, unless the Ordinary permits a second Mass, exclusively for those unable to participate in the Evening Mass. Funerals can only be celebrated without Mass.
Hours of the day. At Office of Readings, the psalms and antiphons of Friday, Week III, may be used.
OPToday or on another day of this week, some communal penitential celebration or "rite of reconciliation" may be held, whether it be sacramental or non-sacramental (according to the spirit of the Rite of Penance, nn.36-37). However, this celebration may not immediately precede Mass.
EASTER TRIDUUM
OP The Easter Triduum of the passion and resurrection of Christ is the culmination of the entire liturgical year. (RC, n.18)
The Easter Triduum begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil, and closes with Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday. (RC, n.19)
During these days it is desirable that brothers and sisters "who experience the mystery of suffering" should share in and be participants in the liturgical celebrations of the community, especially if they are in the hospital, "that they may be helped to know the meaning of this reality which they live in union with the paschal mystery of Christ."
Therefore, keeping in mind their varying conditions and different circumstances, everything should be so arranged that in the most suitable manner the sick may have the possibility of receiving Communion and, if possible, participating in the veneration of the Cross on Good Friday. The various faculties found in the Ritual should be freely used. Indeed our concern which is manifested through our care and prayer furnishes the strongest testimony to all that such concern flows from the gospel, our faith in God, and the power of the resurrection.
Throughout the Triduum, the major prelate presides at the principal hours of the Office and at Mass. The principal hours of the Office begin on the right side of choir.

Today the reading of the Martyrology is omitted.
The tabernacle should be completely empty before the celebration. Enough hosts for the communion of the faithful for tonight and tomorrow should be consecrated during that celebration. For the reservation of the Blessed Sacrament, a place should be prepared and adorned. When the tabernacle is in a chapel separated from the central part of the church, it is appropriate to prepare the place of repose and adoration there. [PS 49] Candles should be provided for the concelebrants and brethren to carry in the procession.
All priests may concelebrate the Mass. Bells may be rung during the Gloria, and are silent thereafter.
OPThe mandatum - the washing of the feet of the brethren [or laity] - may take place before or after the homily.
Gifts for the poor, especially those collected during Lent as the fruit of penance, may be presented in the offertory procession while the people sing Ubi caritas. [PS 52]
OPAfter the Prayer After Communion, the greeting, blessing and dismissal are omitted. The celebrant incenses the Blessed Sacrament three times, receives the humeral veil and the procession follows as in the Missal. The cross-bearer goes first, [PS 54], then the [laity and] brethren carrying candles, and the Blessed Sacrament accompanied by torches and incense.
The brethren and faithful are encouraged, after the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, to spend a suitable period of time during the night in the church in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament that has been solemnly reserved. Solemn adoration ends at midnight; the Blessed Sacrament remains at the Place of Repose until the Liturgical Action of Good Friday.
Today and tomorrow after Night Prayer, the blessing is not given, the antiphon Salve Regina is omitted, and holy water is not used.
The Sermo Dominicus (Jn. 13-17) may be used at table or as the last celebration of the day. In this case it is read in place of Night Prayer with the community gathered before the Blessed Sacrament. [cf. PS 56]

Day of fast and abstinence. Celebration of the Mass and the sacraments is strictly prohibited, except for Penance and Anointing of the Sick. Communion may be taken to the sick, but otherwise is not distributed outside today's Celebration of the Lord's Passion.
OPHours of the day. At Morning Prayer, the Litany Verses from the Dominican Supplement may replace the Intercessions. If so, after Mortem autem crucis all pause and kneel in silence; then the Lord's Prayer is said aloud, and the Hour concludes as usual.
Today the reading of the Martyrology is omitted.
Celebration of the Lord’s Passion.
The celebration has three parts:
I. Liturgy of the Word (readings, homily, intercessions)
II. Veneration of the Cross
III. Holy Communion.
The celebration begins about 3 p.m. The altar is completely bare, without candles, cloth or cross. The ministers enter in silence and prostrate before the altar. This act of prostration, which is proper to the rite of the day, should be strictly observed for it signifies both the abasement of "earthly man," and also the grief and sorrow of the Church. As the ministers enter, the faithful should be standing, and thereafter should kneel in silent prayer. [PS 65]

The Intercessions must follow "the form and wording" handed down by tradition, but the celebrant may make a selection of some more relevant to local conditions, provided the range of intentions is preserved. [PS 67]
The cross is presented to each of the faithful individually for their adoration, since the personal adoration of the cross is a most important feature in this celebration. Only if necessitated by the large numbers of faithful present may the rite of veneration be made simultaneously by all present. Only one cross should be used for the veneration. [PS 69]
OPFor the veneration of the cross the rite proper to our Order may be used instead of one of the two forms given in the Roman Missal. (See the Dominican Supplement.)
The communion rite is as described in the Missal. The sign of peace is not exchanged.
After Holy Communion, the Blessed Sacrament is carried from the church by a priest or deacon wearing a humeral veil and accompanied by two candles. The Sacrament is reserved privately outside the church for the needs of the sick and dying.
The altar is stripped at a suitable time, but the cross remains with four candles, placed so that the faithful may venerate and kiss it and spend some time in meditation. [PS 71]
OPNight Prayer is said after the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at a suitable hour, with two candles alight; the blessing is not given, the antiphon Salve Regina is omitted, and holy water is not used.
Today after the Veneration of the Cross the brethren, when entering and leaving choir, bow profoundly to the cross as on other days, but they do not genuflect.
De profundis for deceased brothers and benefactors and Fidelium are omitted at grace for meals. The custom of wearing the cappa in the refectory may be observed.

Preparation for the Vigil includes: preparation of the bonfire; candles for the brethren and laity; water for the liturgy of Baptism; flowers and decorations for the altar.
EASTER SEASON

IV.  Liturgy of the Eucharist : Preface of Easter I ("on this Easter night"), special Communicantes and Hanc igitur; double alleluia at dismissal.

This liturgical order must not be changed by anyone on his own initiative. [PS 81]

The celebration should truly have the character of a Vigil. It must take place at night; to start earlier (e.g. at the customary time for a Sunday vigil Mass) is a "reprehensible abuse". [PS 78]
OPThe Exsultet may be sung with the melody proper to the Order. Other variations are proposed in the Dominican Supplement: e.g. the Litany may be sung, even when there are no baptisms and no font; Dominican saints and certain invocations are added to the Litany.
OPWherever possible, all the readings should be read so that the character of the Easter Vigil, which demands that it be somewhat prolonged, be respected at all costs. Where pastoral conditions require that the number of readings be reduced, there should be at least three readings from the Old Testament, taken from the law and the prophets; and the reading from Exodus (ch. 14) with its canticle, must never be omitted...

OPBells are be rung during the Gloria, and the altar candles lit; the brethren put off their cappas if they are wearing them.
The celebrant - or, in case of necessity, a cantor - intones the triple alleluia before the Gospel. The gospel is honoured with incense, but candles are not carried.

Mass is to be celebrated on with great solemnity. It is appropriate that the penitential rite on this day take the form of a sprinkling with water blessed at the Vigil, during which a song of baptismal character should be sung. The entrance stoups to the church should also be filled with the same water. [PS 97]
The Paschal Candle burns at all Hours and Masses today. It is kept in the sanctuary near the altar or ambo until Pentecost Sunday. [PS 99]
OPHours of Easter Sunday.
The Easter Vigil takes the place of the Office of Readings. The chant Christus resurgens may be sung at the end of Vespers, followed by Regina caeli, with or without a procession.
Where it is the custom, the tradition of "Baptismal Vespers" with a procession to the font is to be diligently observed. (IGLH, 213)
The Martyrology reading begins with the proclamation of the Resurrection, "This day, which was made by the Lord ..." and then follows the announcement of the date, moon and saints of tomorrow.
OPAfter Night Prayer the paschal candle is extinguished. It remains by the ambo or altar, and is lit throughout the Easter season at Mass and at the principal hours of the Office until Pentecost inclusive.
OPPlenary indulgence under usual conditions for brethren who renew, at least privately, their resolve to fulfil faithfully the duties of their vocation.
OPThe weekly conventual Mass for the Dead is omitted this week. (LCO 71 § II)

The Sacred Host, consecrated during the Mass, is placed in the monstrance on the altar after the Communion of the faithful. After the Prayer after Communion, the Blessed Sacrament is borne out of the Church for the Christian faithful "to make public profession of faith and worship of the Most Blessed Sacrament." The "Christmas Novena" begins today. Special texts in Mass & Office.
It is desirable that vespers from the 17-23 of December should be more solemn by adopting the use of the "major antiphons", and by inviting the faithful to participate at the celebration. Such a celebration, held either before or after the popular devotions to which the faithful are particularly attached, would be an ideal "Christmas novena", in full conformity with the Liturgy and mindful of the needs of the faithful. Some elements, such as the homily, the use of incense, and the intercessions, could also be expanded within the celebration of Vespers [DPPL,n. 103].

OPBefore Mass at midnight on Christmas it is appropriate that the Office of Readings be celebrated as a vigil. (GILH,n.215) At the conclusion of this celebration, as is the custom in the liturgical tradition of our Order, the Genealogy according to Matthew (1:1-16) may be sung. If necessary, the chant, that is the solemn proclamation of the Genealogy, may be sung in the manner proper to the gospel by a cantor who is not a deacon.

Epiphany Proclamation 2026

On the Epiphany of the Lord, after the singing of the Gospel, a Deacon or cantor, in keeping with an ancient practice of Holy Church, announces from the ambo the moveable feasts of the current year according to this formula:

Know, dear brothers and sisters,
that, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ,
so by God's mercy we announce to you also
the joy of his Resurrection, who is our Saviour:
On the eighteenth day of February will fall Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Season of Lent.
On the fifth day of April you will celebrate with joy Easter Day, the Holy Passover of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
On the seventeenth day of May will be the Ascension of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
On the twenty-fourth day of May the feast of Pentecost;
on the seventh day of June, the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.
On the twenty-ninth day of November the first Sunday of the Advent of our Lord, Jesus Christ,
to whom is honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Appendix II

24 December : Proclamation of the Lord's Birth

If celebrated at Morning Prayer, the Proclamation comes after the Final Prayer, the blessing being omitted.
The cantor goes to the pulpit and immediately begins with the announcement of the following day.
